Health Care Reform Debate Highlights Division

Posted by j_cd on September 12, 2009

Not to toot my own horn or anything, but I predicted when he first announced his candidacy that Barack Obama would be elected President of the United States. I also predicted that the so-called “Right Wing” would not exactly display “grace under pressure” in the face of their party’s defeat. All the rude behavior and vicious lies surrounding the current Health Care Reform debate have confirmed it.

When George W. Bush was elected in 2000, the “Left” was very upset (to put it mildly), but when the Supreme Court declared that “W” had won, they swallowed a bitter pill and accepted it. Sure, there was still some argument and demonstration, but after a short time they learned to deal with it.

Contrast that with what we’re seeing now. It was only a few weeks ago that Republican politicians were still asking for President Obama’s birth certificate! Are these people serious?

Then this week, South Carolina Congressman Joe Wilson shouted “You Lie” directly at the President of the United States during a prime time special address to Congress. Did any “Lefties” ever do this to President Bush 43? Not that I recall. If looks could kill, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi would have been the end of that “asshole” right then and there!

One of my best friends just moved from here in the Southern California Inland Empire to a small town outside of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He told me everyone he knows there has a problem with President Obama. Racist terms are not unheard of. His grandparents watch nothing but Fox News and Glenn Beck, the latter frequently getting them “fired up” against Obama.

I find none of this the least bit surprising. The issue of “Undocumented Immigrants” from Mexico turns “Obama haters” into a pack of rabid dogs. Combine this with phrases like “Health Care Reform” and “Public Option”… they start foaming at the mouth.

What we’re left to wonder is, what if HCR actually passes? I think it’s pretty clear where this is going. Brace yourself for more ugliness. Stand firm.

Or maybe we won’t have to worry about it. Health Care Reform has never passed before. Many have tried and failed. I bet Tom Daschle would have been a big help. It’s a shame he had to withdraw his nomination as Secretary of Health and Human Services. I like Kathleen Sebelius, but Daschle had big time connections in the Senate and Congress. He’s an insider.

Experts say that the United States will go bankrupt if Health Care Reform is not enacted now. Didn’t that almost happen already this year? Let’s hope enough of the naysayers will put aside their personal differences and compromise for the sake of the nation. If they look at it pragmatically, there really is no other choice.
