I like to use an application called Monolingual. It deletes all the foreign language files that are installed every time you put new software on your Mac. You’d be surprised how much disk space these files take up. I think I recovered over 1 GB on my Mac Mini recently. Give it a try!

Repairing Internal Drive with Disk Utility in Mac OS X
Posted by j_cd on January 24, 2010
In order to repair the internal drive with Disk Utility, you have to boot from the Startup CD or DVD that came with your Mac. If you have this disc, it’s easy to repair your Mac.
1) Insert disc into drive
2) Launch System Preferences and click on Startup Disk
3) Change the Startup Disk to the CD or DVD and reboot
4) Wait awhile the Mac boots from the disc
5) Launch Disk Utility from the Toolbar menu and repair the Mac hard drive
6) Change Startup Disk back to the Mac hard drive and reboot.
This actually worked for me on a Mac Mini recently. It was spinning beach ball city on that machine, until I finally found the Install Disc and made “minor repairs” to the internal drive. Tweet me @jaycdunn if you have any questions.
